Essay Contest

   We would like to invite Mandarin Middle School students to participate in the Sixth Annual Jacksonville Wi$e Money Week Kids Essay Contest.

Two students (one boy, one girl) will be named this year's Wi$e Money Kids and each winner will receive a $1,000 kids college savings account provided by SunTrust Bank.

This contest is  open to  Middle School students who  submit an essay answering the 2017 Question highlighting the importance of being Wi$e about Money.

The goal of Wi$e Money Week is to teach you how to properly manage your money. Part of being a productive citizen in the 21st century involves being financially responsible. When we are not financially responsible it affects everyone around us in one way or another.

The 2017 Question is:
Think about a time when you, or someone you know was NOT financially responsible and made a bad financial decision. If you could go back and change your decision or give someone advice, what would you say in order to turn the poor financial decision into a smart, responsible one?

2017 Reading Extravaganza

The 2017 Reading Extravaganza is coming up on Saturday, May 13! Students will receive recognition for their reading achievements, including their reading medals. In order to be recognized, students must meet the Annual Reading Expectation by Grade Level. A Certificate of Achievement will be sent to each DCPS school to distribute to each student who meets the reading expectations before the Reading Extravaganza.

St. Johns River Celebration 22nd Annual Cleanup

Help keep Jacksonville beautiful by participating in the St. Johns River Celebration 22nd Annual Cleanup on Saturday, March 25. Join hundreds of volunteers around Duval County by removing litter and debris from parks, boat ramps, and neighborhoods. Participants must be at least 18 years old or accompanied by an adult. Agriscience Biotechnology & Vet Assisting
The Agriscience Biotechnology program will introduce students to the world of utilizing science to increase the effectiveness of living organisms. The program begins with a course in Agricultural Science and progresses to Agricultural Biotechnology. Emphasis will be on cellular biology and genetics as well as current trends and methods in biotechnology and the application of valid scientific principles. The field of biotechnology is growing rapidly providing numerous career opportunities.

2016 School Choice Expo

Parents, children, and the Jacksonville community can learn more about the variety of learning options and choices within Duval County Public Schools at the 2016 School Choice Expo on Saturday, January 9 at the Prime Osborn Convention Center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  

Admission and Parking are FREE.

Report Cards and Survey

           As report cards are sent home with students this week, they will also be receiving a Federal Impact Aid Survey Form.  It is important that parents fill out this form if they are an active duty member of the military, or a civilian or contractor who works or lives on any of the federal properties, housing communities and/or military bases listed on the form.  Parents, please  return the form as soon as possible. 
           This program helps the district receive federal funding for the purchase of books, materials, technology, capital improvement, and much more. For more information about this program or to download additional forms, click here or contact the Department of School Choice at 390-2144.

Mandarin AICE Program

COME LEARN ABOUT THE AICE PROGRAM AT MANDARIN HIGH SCHOOL

Parents will be able to learn about the expectations of students in the AICE program. AICE coordinator, Mrs. Jennifer Oglesby, School Administrators, Guidance and current AICE teachers will be available to meet and to discuss our excellent program. In addition, current AICE students will be present to give tours of the school as well as answer any possible questions. In order to be considered for the AICE program, students must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.0. Students must obtain a level 4/5 on the eighth grade FSA and have taken Algebra 1 by the end of the 8th grade. Private school candidates must submit a copy of standardized test scores. We look forward to seeing you!

AVID – WICOR Strategy of the Month:
Socratic Seminar
A Socratic Seminar is dialogue where students seek deeper understanding of complex ideas. Students evaluate ideas, issues, and values in texts and share different perspectives. The discussion is a dialogue not a debate. Students are encouraged to share these ideas and think out loud, while asking higher order questions in a polite manner.

Chat with the Supe!

Chat with the Supe is an opportunity for the general public to engage in an informal conversation with Dr. Vitti to discuss the key issues, challenges, and concerns for our schools.  Topics include school programs, boundary updates, uniform polices, safety, standardized testing, literacy, implementing STEM curriculum, and improving student performance.

The first meeting will be held on Monday, October 12 from 6:00 -7:00 P.M. at the Town Center Barnes and Noble Bookstore.

The district is pleased to present the 4th annual Jacksonville Goes to College Week. The Jacksonville College Fair Planning Committee has created a calendar of events for the Week of October 5-10 that encompasses the district's commitment of equal access to a high quality education for all students and the assurance that students will graduate ready for postsecondary education and/or the competitive workplace. The week has been designed to engage families, communities, school staff, and students in activities that promote college and career access and success.

ESSAY CONTEST

The World Languages and ESOL Departments invite students to participate in the annual Hispanic Heritage Essay Contest. Two winners will each receive a certificate signed by the mayor as well as various other prizes. All essay submissions should be sent from teachers to davisj4@duvalschools.org no later than 5:00 P.M. on October 16th.

The Hispanic Heritage Essay Contest
Essay Guidelines:
• Must be one page, written in English or Spanish, typed and double-spaced with one inch margins. Times New Roman, 12 font, on 8 ½” x 11” white paper.
• Must include a title page containing only the names of the essay, your name, your teacher’s name, your school’s name, and the name of this contest.
• Must include a bibliography using MLA or APA format for all sources including interviews. Failure to credit sources is plagiarism and will result in disqualification.
• Must be written about a person of Hispanic heritage from the Jacksonville community who has made a significant contribution in one of the following areas: Medicine The Arts (visual, music, theater, etc.) Politics Law Education Business Literature Science
• Please read the rubric carefully and understand how your essay will be judged.
Two winners will be selected: one student from middle school and one from high school.
The winners will each receive a certificate signed by the Mayor as well as various prizes.
